There is a reason we list Bipolar Ionization first. We are certain it should be your first line of defense in any air purification situation due to its cost and effectiveness in eliminating microorganisms like mold, bacteria, and viruses, as well as its superior ability to reduce dust, pollen, odors, and other volatile organic compounds. Cascade Ionization is the only purification technique we recommend as a standalone method, though it can be combined with other methods listed below to render even more effective outcomes.
•Causes dust and pollen to clump into bigger particles. This causes the particles and pathogens to fall from your breathing zone and get captured more easily in your air filter.
•Deactivates viruses by robbing the virus of hydrogen from its outer shell needed for the virus to attach to living cells and replicate.
•Reduces static electricity which has been proven to attract microorganisms especially to clothing and electronic devices like touch screens, monitors, and smartphones.
•Is an "active" filtration process which means the air throughout the entire space is actively disinfected continually, including surfaces, appliances, floors, and walls.
•Portable or installed in almost any current HVAC system with no regular replacement parts needed.
HEPA filtration is the CDC's #1 recommendation for air purification due to its effectiveness in removing micro-particles and pathogens from the air. It is not, however, recommended as a standalone method of purification for a number of reasons.
• HEPA is a "passive" air filtration process that is highly effective in removing particles that pass through its filter media, but it does very little to actively disinfect the space or surfaces in a room.
• HEPA filters can cause a sizable pressure drop when installed in HVAC systems which could damage components, add strain to equipment, and actually promote growth of microorganisms inside equipment and ductwork by creating an environment with increased moisture and lower airflow.
• HEPA filters can be expensive depending on the size and application and require semi-annual replacement.
• Often times it is required to provide custom modifications in spaces employing HEPA alone in order to maximize effectiveness.
Despite these drawbacks, we at o2 Defense believe HEPA is a valuable technique especially when employed in combination with Bipolar Ionization or PCO and can greatly increase purification effectiveness when used in conjunction with these other methods.
Ultraviolet (UV) Lights are proven to disinfect the surface of anything the light is exposed to. It can be highly effective in keeping equipment with internal components exposed to air or moisture sterile and can even be used to kill harmful pathogens that get trapped on filters and surfaces. It is central in PCO systems and can be used in conjunction with Bipolar Ionization or HEPA filters to yield effective purification results, however there are risks and drawbacks to consider.
•UV bulbs must be concealed during operation as exposure to ultraviolet rays will damage retina and potentially cause permanent vision loss.
•UV bulbs require annual replacement.
•UV light only kills what the light physically touches. This means that while the process is technically an "active" purification process, sterilization is only effective within the chamber itself in which the bulb is present.
•Particles must be exposed to the UV light for often a matter of minutes before being destroyed making it minimally effective in air purification, but highly effective for surfaces and internal HVAC components.
Photocatalytic Oxidation (PCO) is highly effective in quickly eliminating pathogens from the air and surfaces. It has been tested to even destroy microorganisms in a sneeze within inches from the mouth. It is highly recommended in spaces with high risk infectious diseases such as isolation and quarantine rooms, infectious disease treatment centers, and emergency quarantine and outbreak prevention applications. Some potential risks and considerations must be understood, however.
•PCO uses a titanium dioxide element exposed to ultraviolet light in order to create a chemical reaction within an air handler causing hydroperoxides to form and spread throughout a space. These hydroperoxides are highly effective in neutralizing pathogens, however there has been little study on how they effect human and animal cells over time.
•Titanium Dioxide has been tested and is a suspected carcinogenic substance when found in particular forms.
•PCO systems require regular replacement of UV bulbs.
